- Badass intro theme is badass

- So apparently if Zephyr is your man (which seems true for many people) First Guy Wins applies. It worked in RoA, but that definitely did not work in RoT…

- Zephy: Hahaha…Hahahaha! (I think it was because I was reading Umineko theories and stuff, but I had Beato’s voice in my head when I read that.)

- This has to be one of the most RPGesque soundtracks of Fantasia. I believe the soundtrack is actually original to the game…right?

- Albel came off as such a jerk…but then he becomes all cute and awkward and SAVE THE ANIMALS!!1!! And woman issues. Just like Nazim! …Monster Flute was such a…girly sounding attack in a fierce battle. oh well.

So for those who may or may not know, sake visual is a little indie VN company founded by the wonderful sake-bento, who is a regular on the Lemmasoft Forums. Some of us otome fans might recognize this name, because we all were fangirling over a certain game that came out in February.

However!  Jisei is totally different.

For one thing, it’s not otome. (sorry girls.)And it’s tons darker than Re:Alistair ++. And you have to pay for the full version.

Yes, this is the very first thing you see in the entire game.

But don’t let that you scare you…from buying it. I mean. -shot- It’s actually really good.

The characters!

Oh yeah, you might want to know about them too, huh…

??? – ???-kun is the main character of the story. He doesn’t exactly have a name, though sake has said that his name will appear in the second part of this game. He has this ability to see the dying moments of corpses, which, frankly, kinda sucks. He’s cute though. Throughout the demo, he kinda has to keep himself not guilty looking because a certain PMS–I mean, a woman sees him touching the corpse that he wants to figure the death of. He likes coffee, like pretty much the majority of the adult population.

Chance Jackson – The girl who works in the coffee shop. I like the flower in her hair, don’t you? She wants to become a professional singer, though frankly she’d be better off training in a church choir or something, and if she’s not religious, maybe she should sing at the coffee shop … but I digress. She’s a sweet girl. If with some anger issues. But it was definitely justified. Oh, her name isn’t really Chance, by the way, it’s Bertha. …but Chance sounds a little like a dog’s name…

So unfortunately he stumbles to a corpse in the woman’s bathroom when he walks by  to use the men’s bathroom after not feeling so hot.

Because you really needed another body. Sucks to be ???

It is icky.

So PMS–er, I mean a woman sees him, crap happens, but it’s all right because we see the officer guy on break and he calms the situation down. Sorta.

I have a feeling he's taken already, but a girl can dream.

You’ve got my attention. -stares-

Detective Mikolaj Gurski – the really hot off-duty detective guy that happens to be in the coffee shop when the murder happens. He questions the crap out of everyone, and tells ???-kun to do the same to everyone else. Let’s just say that ??? doesn’t exactly start out right with this guy. Frankly, if he questioned me, I’d be fine. Did I mention he’s voiced by the guy who animated Leather Pants?

We’re also introduced to the two other possible suspects as well.

She comes here a lot. Too much coffee is not good for you, my dear.

Jennifer Bergstrom – The PMS Lady The obviously stressed out lady from her job in Human Resources. Or something. She saw ??? touch the body, so she’s pretty convinced that he did it, and so ??? must prove his innocence against her manicured pointy fingers.

He has glasses! -shot-

Kizaki Suitani- A guy. No seriously, this is a guy. Don’t look at me like that. When you hear his voice, it’s definitely a guy’s. Besides that, he’s a timid college kid (weird to say because I’m not even in college yet) who was chilling at his laptop when the murder was announced. Supposedly. He can apparently write in Japanese, though who knows if that’s true or not. He comes to the coffee shop because it’s a quiet place…which I think means that this coffee shop is about to go out of business or he’s lying, because coffee shops are not quiet.

The demo, if I’ve played it correctly, goes to about halfway of this story. Basically all you (???-kun) are doing are investigating, Phoenix Wright style. Sort of. I’m actually playing it again so I could screencap, and it’s interesting to pick a few choices I didn’t pick before… However, the way that sake wrote the story is pretty solid, since it’s not especially obvious who the killer is, and she makes it in a way that anyone could be the killer. Well, I think so. I also like the characters, and it’s rather obvious who I’m partial too, ehehe.

The music is fitting for the game. It’s creepy and it keeps you on edge. Seriously. I think my heart is pounding just listening to it. It is truly background music.

The interface is good too. I like all the customizations in it, like the window and the notes (coughtipscough) and it also fits with the mood of the VN.

Thankfully, you are the one writing it, and not some psycho witch lady.

Even comes with a coffee stain!

The one little bug that I had with Jisei is the resolution. Playing this on my MacBook, and being a bit ignorant since I just got it recently, there were times that I couldn’t touch any of the buttons because the dock was in the way. However, today I found out you could hide the dock … whoops. However, for other people who might be playing it on a Mac, you’re better off hiding off the dock (Command-Option-D) or playing it Fullscreen.

Overall, Jisei is a creepy little VN that I’m sure will entertain you. Especially when the disembodied voice arrives. It has a relationship with Kizaki. (Just kidding.) As a slightly faint-of-heart person, that corpse freaks the crap out of me, but I’m sure it’s perfectly fine for everyone else. I hope.

The sequel of Fantasia, the Realm of Thanos, Fantasia, Requiem of the Abyss is finally hereeeee~!

But, since I don’t exactly have a butt load of time, I’m going over the beginning. Although that was covered in the demo, who played the demo a long time ago? -sees hands- SO Yeah~!

I would suggest that, if you haven’t, play the first Fantasia before starting this game. But I think if you’re reading this, you probably already have!

So the day starts out with us finding out about the world of Fantasia 26 years after the original. Yes, Oswald is still Oswald, still a bit of a jerk, but he’s married to Cheryl (the heroine of the original), so he’s mellowed out. However, his daughter Valen (aka the heroine of this story) is a teenager, so naturally she argues with her parents.

…I just thought that this was hilarious.

Apparently there has been some kind of war that’s reactivated the realm of Thanos, which kinda sucks. Well, the war and Thanos reactivating both. But you see, there was one good thing about that.

I don't know about you, but I thought his hair was purple. Must've been the realm.

Because this is the way you introduce yourself to other people.

It’s forgivable, because he’s been stuck in a realm all of his life.

Oh, if you didn’t know, Cain is a bit mean toward Valen. Hee hee. ;D Daddy’s Girl. But it looks like they’ve met before…childhood friends, eh~?

Well, when you go out with Cain, you’re presented with three places that you can go when Cain disappears. As for me, I chose the Central District, and I came with this guy.

Volg Tribe, ladies and gentlemen. He’s a Nomad, which basically means he’s a half-animal kind of thing. If you can see his tail under the text. Unlike Cain, he’s a cheerful guy. And yeah, the hero thing. He’s apparently here to join a guild.

Unfortunately Cain has been chasing your tail the entire time without you knowing. Seriously, what is your immortal power, Valen? I don’t even…

Nicer than he looks!

This is Nazim, Prince of Valdrox, the Southern kingdom, which is more importantly known as the land of MANGOES. He came to Valdrus like a thief in the night…okay, maybe not. He’s a Navandel, or a Dark Elf. He has woman issues, kinda like Guy from Tales of the Abyss, but darker.

So, he’s here for a peace talk with Seldrus. Apparently all these people are coming along, like Klavier Anton Richard Klavios!

I hope you are meme worthy as Richard...but probably not.

Our token bishonen is here! Hooray! He’s the prince of Seldrus, he’s blonde, and rather polite, so you have to forgive me if I accidentally call him by some other names. PRINCESS! Not that I hate him or anything. He seems fine enough. He’s also the last of the available guys to be introduced.

But speaking of the old available guys…

Does he still have issues with his powers?

It just occurred to me that Ian, back in the day, used to worship Oswald or something. XD Surely Ian grew up to be a badass too!

Aww, Leon has such a cute daughter.

Ciel. Token best friend character, but what the heck. She’s adorable. The greatest thing about it though, is that she already has a fiancé. Supposedly she’s enjoying her freedom as a single woman until then. And since he’s Leon’s daughter, that would make her cousins with Raven. They get along quite nicely…hehehe.

The party goes along nicely, until unfortunately some red haired anti-social sociopath (in the words of Valen) started to not feel so good. They have a little talk together…

So it seems that Cain has some issues.

This being a Fantasia game, and an otome game, there’s bound to be problems everywhere. Hehehe.

Might have spoilers for Persona 3. XD;

It might be because Asbel is too pretty for a main character. I mean, I didn’t even fangirl about Yuri that much, and he’s awesome. He’s up there with Leon. And it’s weird, because the reason I like Leon was because…of Judas, now that I think about it. I knew his backstory, and that’s why I liked Leon. I know next to nothing about Asbel except the fact that his papa died and now he’s gotta come back to take his place as slave driver — I mean, feudal lord. Or something. He also gets extra laughs for spinning kicks and being voiced by Spinzaku. 

But you know what would make Asbel more awesome? If he died. Like, Minato of Persona 3 messiah style >D I mean, the hero has never died in a Tales game before, right? And Asbel seems …good enough to sacrifice himself? I mean, isn’t this Tales about protecting precious people? I mean, Minato sacrificed his soul to become the barrier between Nyx and humanity. Asbel could do that too. For, Sophie, or something. Speaking of Sophie, she seems like a purple haired Presea with fists. But since she’s the main heroine, she probably has something to do with the main plot this time. >D I like her. She’s cute. 

Oh, and another cool thing that they could do for Tales of Graces is if they had a betrayer, that it would be Cheria. I mean, she’s racked up a huge fanbase. Wouldn’t it just be the funniest thing if their little moe girl suddenly betrayed Asbel for some odd reason?! I’d laugh maniacly. It’s just that her character design racks up moe points with those 2-channers, and the fact that she’s the daughter of a butler and uses knives and magic draws parallels to Sakuya Izayoi of Touhou (well, that just might be me), …well, the fact that she’s the fandom’s darling makes me want her to betray the group for some unknown reason. But, due to her loyalty to Asbel, I doubt that’s going to happen. If there is a betrayer, it’s probably going to be Malik. >D But wouldn’t it be awesome?!

Or Pascal! Because Pascal is just weird. XD Her and her drills…but I love her hair! She looks like she could be the next Harold. I’m guessing by her name that she’s a genius of some sort…

Oh, actually, then again maybe Hubert could betray…you know, they could all betray Asbel at any time in my opinion! Even though Hubert is Asbel’s brother…though they look nothing alike. Like, it took me a couple of days to figure out how they were related. At first, I was thinking that Asbel and Hubert were friends or something that call themselves brothers, but then when I realized they were actual blood brothers (because Hubert changed his last name when he joined the military), I was like, “Oh. ….but how?!” I’m actually warming up to Hubert, because he wears glasses. >D People who know me well…know that I like megane men. And plus, he could possible be a Type A Tsundere.  For his brother. >D That’ll be interesting. Plus, he pushes his glasses up with his middle finger XD;;;;;; Well, the pushing glasses up with fingers is more of a Souji from Persona 4 thing from me, and I <3 Souji (REAL MEN USE PONIES!) So yeah.

It’s all about Shinjiro. Let’s face it. >D I mean, you’re both going to die anyway. It’s all about Mshe/Shinjiro because of the limited time. …then maybe if my messiah hope for Asbel works out for Cheria since apparently she has a disease of some sort. XD; Well, the whole limited time thing would work for Asbel/Cheria. I just hope that both games come to the US, even if I don’t have a PSP. I can always ask my cousins for that. But anyway, Shinjiro has an awesome deep voice. Somehow, he beat Akihiko (who is voiced by HIKARU MIDORIKAWA, for heaven’s sake) >D for who I like. I haven’t even played the original P3 either. I’ve just been stalking Youtube videos for my information. If Atlus brings P3P, I hope they bring Shinji’s voice back. He’s pretty awesome.

There’s this girl, chocoshell – http://phoenixrose.wordpress.com/, on WordPress who reviews otome games from Japan. She’s one of the few who can tell us what the heck’s going on, for us sad english speaking otome fans, but she also has amusing commentary (of the fangirl variety) to go along with it. Thanks to her, I got this idea to write a couple of reviews of otome games of my own. However, instead of reviewing Japanese games (since I can’t read/speak Japanese or read kanji at all, I’ve decided to review the few English ones that are out there…and them some regular BxG stuff. 

The stuff I review is usually made by a system called Ren’py. Yup, that’s right. You can actually make English language visual novels now. Don’t you love technology? It’s a slightly bit complicated, but with some time, a dedicated person can make their visual novel. And they usually come with good results. It’s also easy to play too. All you have to do is have a program that reads .zip and/or .rar files, and go to http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Ren%27Py_Games or http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewforum.php?f=11 for some of the new games. For the latter, the download link for the game is often on the first post of the topic. Guys will be happy to know that most of the games are BxG on the site, thus bishoujo everywhere~ And there’s also yuri and yaoi games as well. But for me, I’m all up for the otome games. Because I am a maiden. 

Anyway, the first game reviewed ever on this blog happens to be set mostly in a fantasy setting, far away from the world that we know and love.

It’s called ‘Fantasia’, the Realm of Thanos for a reason, you know.

Now some people might already be put off by the artwork. If you’re used to pretty, detailed graphics, this might be a shock. But since the visual novels on Ren’py are fanmade, these are made by common, hardworking people. But it’s pretty enough, right? Yes, it is. -points and stabs- But you should at least like the screen…

Plot: Cheryl Nielsen is a regular high school girl (who lost her family in a plane accident. Typical.) Alone in the summer season, Cheryl is walking when she meets a woman she calls the ‘White Lady’. The ‘White Lady’ explains that she has been looking for Cheryl because she has the potential to save Fantasia from an evil Realm. Called Thanos. -tilts head- The reason why Cheryl can save that world is because Cheryl has experienced pain (losing family) and the keys which save Fantasia are inside people (seriously) who have experienced similar pain. Through the power of love (it’s an otome game, for heaven’s sake!) the world of Fantasia can be saved. But be warned ~ once she goes to Fantasia, there’s a chance that Cheryl may never come back. If that’s because she wants to say or if that’s because she dies there is up to the player. Good luck~

Characters:

Cheryl Nielsen – You, the MC. This name can be changed, as you can tell. Cheryl is an average high school girl…well, she lost her family in a tragic plane accident and has been alone ever since. Sometimes she forgets that they’re gone. You know, typical otome heroine stuff, right? And besides, losing your kin actually leads to having romance, so it’s perfectly fine. Cheryl is a rather nice person who likes to help poor handsome boys by giving speeches and meddling in their lives whenever possible, just so they can fall in love with her, take their key, and kill the devil–I mean, Demon Lord. Of course. :3 

White Lady – The woman who brought Cheryl to Fantasia. She is a calm, motherly woman, although she can crack some jokes when she wants to. She seems rather anxious around the Demon Lord, Oswald. She guides Cheryl onto the right path the guys, giving her helpful pheromones that make guys attract her and kinda acting like her maid….I’d like a maid like the White Lady.

 ’The Boy Who Thirsts For Blood‘ ….hm, sounds like a good song title.

Leon Xaverius – One of the top knights of Seldrus Kingdom, which is where the story takes place in Fantasia. He’s pretty nice, and blue. And his name is Leon, so you kinda know that he’s going to be a bit emo sometimes and have a tragic past.He totally deserves to be voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa for that reason, but…er, nevermind. Leon has a tendency to go berserk at times, and then he can be nice. I think he might be a borderline schizophrenic, but then again, if you were a guy who could kill people before 7 am in the morning, you’d probably go a little crazy. Oh, did I mention he kills people with his mind?

He actually likes Cheryl, so he’s definitely one of the easiest guys to catch. But if you don’t want him, he ends up with a maid from the castle, so it’s all good. Besides the fact that he goes psycho from time to time, he will act like a gentleman, nice enough to return Cheryl’s handkerchief. Another thing to note for people going for him – he likes meat, and lots of it.

Ian Vanguardion – If you thought the same thing that I did when I first saw Ian, I totally thought he was a rip-off of Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho, minus Jagan Eye. To some people’s delight, he’s definitely not the same. Ian is the youngest of the group, younger than the MC (while everyone else is the same or older than her). And he acts like it too. He really doesn’t like fighting, due to the fact that he has a cursed body (he can freeze stuff by breathing – King Midas redux ) He’s usually quite happy and genki and idolizes Leon (to his annoyance) and Oswald.

Some people in the Lemma Soft thread for FtRoT seem to get Ian first, for some reason. (Got Leon first ^^; I like Leon.) Ian is pretty easy too.Unlike Leon and Gil, Ian doesn’t end up with any girl if you don’t choose him. Oh, and he likes spaghetti.

‘The Boy who Trusts No One‘ – seriously, these remind me of Touhou Project character titles.

Gil Roughknight – Actually, you’re not really supposed to know his name until later, but whatever. Gil, or ‘Hooded Boy’, as he is known in the beginning, hides his head more or less because he is an elf, or actually, a half-elf. And if you’ve ever played Tales of Symphonia, we kinda know what happens to people like Gil. That’s probably why he doesn’t trust anyone, especially humans. But he’s pretty under hood. For some reason, he’s looking for someone with ultimate power.

I wonder if Gil is liked the least. He’s quite calm throughout the game…in reality, I’d like a nice, calm guy like him. By the way, he likes vegetables.

Oswald Leingod – Oswald is probably Fantasia’s version of Satan, in my personal opinion. He’s arrogant, disrespectful, tactless, and sometimes downright mean. Yet, Oswald is definitely capturable. He’s the hardest to get out of all of them, but it’s worth it. Besides, he has his nice sides, and the best backstory in the game. Ironically, even though he’s the last guy to be revealed in the game, he was so popular that he is canonly the main hero. I think that might be the first otome game where the last hero, and not to mention villain, was actually the main. 

You kinda heard my opinion already. Actually, I can’t help but think the odds were stacked too heavily in Oswald’s favor….^^; He likes …fruit salad. XD I don’t get it either, just deal with it.

The Goods: A fun story, a full story,  distinct personalities. 15! endings. There’s also a small fanbase, which is fun to talk to when you’re done with the story.

The Bad…s: Art could use some work, the music and background are ripped off (although this isn’t really that bad), story can be cliched at times, and doing Oswald’s dirty work kills me inside T_T; There’s also some type-os, since English is the creator’s second language.

I totally and wholeheartedly recommend this title to pretty much any otome gamer who can’t really afford otome games (it is free…you just need a zip opener like Winzip to open the game). It’s really easy to understand the story (besides the typos), and it’s really fun. Oswald’s story might kill the weak of heart….just kidding. You might cry a little. 

Extra Notes: Everyone is worth getting the good ending for at least once. Oswald, obviously, since he has the most endings. But the Starry Night Festival, an event that happens midgame, is something only Ian can win. Also, aim to get the secret ending when you can. It’s great.
